The young hands pushed away the brown crinkled leaves from in front of the tombstone. The feel of the wind and the sound of the leaves left goosebumps on the silver haired woman sitting in the wheel chair. Her still soft blue eyes left the stone, peering into the sky where purple and pink rays moved with grace as if dancing to music.
“This doesn’t make sense,” the child told her. “It says grandpa was ...born in the year, 1474 and died 2054.” Tightly squeezing his eyes closed the child whispered while using his fingers to try and count out the years.
Confused the child ran to some of the other stones wiping the leaves away to peer at the dates. Scratching his head he dragged his feet as he approached his grandma again.
“These other stones start with 19 and a few with 18, there must be a mistake.”
“Look at the sky,” said grandma, her finger pointing upward. “Do you see the magical lights?”
The child’s head rose toward the sky as a soft smile formed on his lips.
“Pretty isn’t it,” She said in aww. They starred at the moving rays in the sky, not saying a word, each with their own thoughts. Although it felt like hours it was only moments before grandma spoke again. “Come on, let’s go home and I will tell you a wonderful story about your grandfather.”
Glancing back toward the grave the child kneeled and his fingers rubbed along each letter on the tombstone. Although the stone was rough the letters were smooth. P O N T I U S L E O N.
The wind picked up, swirling leaves rushed around the ground recovering the places the child wiped them from, including grandpa’s tombstone.
JP put his hands on the arms of the wheel chair and turned Marlena around wheeling toward the gate of the graveyard.
Wiping a small tear from her face grandma closed her eyes saying a small prayer in her head, while kissing the Miraculous Medal on her neck. Taking in a deep breath, she glanced up at the young man pushing her around.
“I have baked some cookies before your mother dropped you off. How about some hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies before I sit and tell you my story about your grandfather.”
“Sounds great,” the voice said as the wheel chair gained speed toward the house. “Weeee”
