Ponce de Leon was sent on a voyage to explore this land he called Pascua Florida, for the King of Spain. His job was to find more gold and the Waters of Life to help heal King Ferdinand who was 35 yrs older than his young wife. When he asked the Indians to join them for a meal and about the waters of life for the King, he was forced to go through the swirling lights to find Merlin in exchange.
Marlena who is a history teacher in the year 2014 was dressed like Merlin at the Renaissance Fair selling bottles of water with the words Fountain of Youth on them to raise money for the school. Little did she know she would get picked up by a knight, and go through swirling rainbow lights back into the year 1513.
It was at the pilgrims’ dinner with the Indians that it was discovered what year she was in and who she was dining with. She already had a hate for Ponce for kidnapping her to this place, but when he choked on some food and she did CPR to bring him back to life that is when her life became in danger. Now she was considered a witch and the person she disliked the most was the one to protect her and help her get back to her time.

Ok so who besides me have trouble figuring out Genres. I mean I have written a few books and put them in the YA section since I think Teens and early 20’s and on would like to read them. I am writing a new book FANTASY and trying to figure out if this book should be YA or in my mind Middle Grade. Yea so now I just brought up another genre. So let’s look up definitions of these Genres.
Middle Grade: Ages of readers 8 – 12yrs. about 30,000 to 50,000 words but if fantasy can run longer, no profanity, graphic violence or sexuality, and if any romance it is limited to a first kiss. Age of protagonist usually about 10 yrs for a younger MG novel and up to 13 yrs for older.
Young Adult: Ages of readers 13 -18 about 50,000 to 75,000 words but if fantasy can run longer. Profanity, graphic violence, romance & sexuality content allowed. Age of protagonist usually 14 – 15 yrs for younger YA with cleaner content aimed at middle- school crowd. And for older & more edgy YA characters can be up to 18 yrs but not in college.
New Adult: Ages of readers 18 – 25 yrs. featuring mainly university or college- aged protagonists dealing with early twenties life, in particular romance and sexual relationships.
Now let’s look at Children Books: As I research this I find that many classic “Children’s” books were made from books that were created for adults which were adapted for the younger audience. Of course as time goes on there are books made just for children.
A child is a human between the stages of birth and puberty. The legal definition of child generally refers to a minor, otherwise known as a person younger than the age of majority.
Look at Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This book is about a lonely princess, living with her wicked step mother who is jealous of her as she grows up. When her magic mirror says that Snow White is the fairest of the land the wicked step mother sends her huntsman to kill her.
If you look at all the definitions of Middle School and YA I would think this should not be a child’s story, since it just went against all the rules. The protagonist is a young woman, not a child, and the wicked step mother creates a poison apple for a sleeping death for the young princess so that she can be the fairest in the land.
This alone defies what would make this a child’s story.
So in the end, what really is the difference between a Middle Age and Young Adult story. Do the characters have to be of the same age as the reader or can it be something that would just interest them even if the characters are older or younger than they are.
I guess the reader will decide.
Please read this and tell me what you think? Does this first chapter draw you in?
The young hands pushed away the brown crinkled leaves from in front of the tombstone. The feel of the wind and the sound of the leaves left goosebumps on the silver haired woman sitting in the wheel chair. Her still soft blue eyes left the stone, peering into the sky where purple and pink rays moved with grace as if dancing to music.
“This doesn’t make sense,” the child told her. “It says grandpa was ...born in the year, 1474 and died 2054.” Tightly squeezing his eyes closed the child whispered while using his fingers to try and count out the years.
Confused the child ran to some of the other stones wiping the leaves away to peer at the dates. Scratching his head he dragged his feet as he approached his grandma again.
“These other stones start with 19 and a few with 18, there must be a mistake.”
“Look at the sky,” said grandma, her finger pointing upward. “Do you see the magical lights?”
The child’s head rose toward the sky as a soft smile formed on his lips.
“Pretty isn’t it,” She said in aww. They starred at the moving rays in the sky, not saying a word, each with their own thoughts. Although it felt like hours it was only moments before grandma spoke again. “Come on, let’s go home and I will tell you a wonderful story about your grandfather.”
Glancing back toward the grave the child kneeled and his fingers rubbed along each letter on the tombstone. Although the stone was rough the letters were smooth. P O N T I U S L E O N.
The wind picked up, swirling leaves rushed around the ground recovering the places the child wiped them from, including grandpa’s tombstone.
JP put his hands on the arms of the wheel chair and turned Marlena around wheeling toward the gate of the graveyard.
Wiping a small tear from her face grandma closed her eyes saying a small prayer in her head, while kissing the Miraculous Medal on her neck. Taking in a deep breath, she glanced up at the young man pushing her around.
“I have baked some cookies before your mother dropped you off. How about some hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies before I sit and tell you my story about your grandfather.”
“Sounds great,” the voice said as the wheel chair gained speed toward the house. “Weeee”
